The work a licensed gas fitter covers

Gas fitting is licensed trade, and everything below is done by qualified gas fitters:

  • New gas runs and extensions to feed a cooktop, heater or barbecue
  • Gas appliance installation, from ovens to pool heaters
  • Storage and continuous-flow gas hot water, installed and connected
  • Gas leak detection, repair and pressure testing
  • Upgrades to ageing gas runs and fittings in older homes

Water heating by gas is covered with the rest of our hot water work.

Wangi Wangi Gas Fitting Services

The gas work splits into two jobs, and each has its own page of detail:

Gas Appliance Installation

Cooktops, ovens, BBQs, heaters and pool heaters, connected and commissioned with the line tested on completion, and any old run checked against current rules while we're there:

Gas Leak Detection and Repair

Smells, pilots that keep dropping out, and lines that fail a test, traced with gas detectors and repaired where the fix is straightforward:

When Does an Old Gas Run Need Work?

An ageing gas line shows signs before it fails. Any of these suggests the supply pipe, not just the appliance, needs a look:

  • A pilot or burner that lights unevenly, or keeps going out
  • Green marking or visible corrosion at joints and fittings
  • An appliance that fails its test at service time
  • A smell near the meter or along the line that comes and goes

Each one earns a detector pass and a pressure test before anyone quotes a fix.

From Your Call to the Final Test

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Trace and test

A gas detector reads over the appliance and the line, and a pressure test follows wherever a leak is suspected.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

How is gas work priced here?

"They were incredibly efficient and professional, happily answered all our questions, and gave us clear advice on what to do, with a quote supplied promptly." Sharni

Pipe is sold by the metre, and that is where a gas quote starts. The rest follows from there:

  • Length of run: every extra metre of pipe is extra material and time
  • The appliance itself: a wall heater is a different job to a pool heater
  • Access: crawling under a low fibro floor to lay pipe is slower work than fixing it to a garage wall
  • Timing: a gas fault handled at night is charged at the after-hours rate, which you know about before the van leaves

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.

Gas Lines From the Holiday Years

Older homes, older connections

Wangi Wangi's housing runs from fibro and weatherboard cottages of the 1940s to 1960s through to brick veneer from the 1980s and later units. The oldest homes can keep gas pipework and heaters from their first decades, and a renovation is the point where those get brought up to today's standard. Any gas job here starts by checking what the existing pipe is and how it has held up.

Salt works on the metal too

Tidal salt water surrounds the peninsula, and the air near the shore ages brass and copper ahead of schedule. A meter, regulator or outdoor connection facing the lake shows corrosion first, and that gets checked rather than assumed away.

Who the Job Belongs To Instead

When we're not the right call: a leak at the meter, or anywhere on the distributor's side of it, goes to the gas network's emergency line, since that pipe is theirs. Faulty ignition wiring or a dead power point behind an oven goes to an electrician.

Gas questions, answered plainly

Who can legally carry out gas work in Wangi Wangi?

Gas fitting is licensed work in NSW, so every installation, alteration or repair needs a licensed gas fitter. All gas work on this peninsula is done under that licence, from a new cooktop connection to a full replacement of an old gas run.

Does the salty air around the lake shorten the life of gas fittings?

It does. The lake water here is tidal and salty, so homes near the shore get salt in the air all year and brass and copper fittings age faster than they would inland. On an older run that surfaces as corrosion at the joints, and checking for it is part of any gas job.

Can the old gas line in a mid-century cottage be updated during a renovation?

Yes, and a reno is the natural time to do it. Some older homes here still run their original gas fittings and heaters, and once walls and floors are open, bringing that pipework up to the current standard is simpler. It is priced as its own part of the reno quote.

Do you connect barbecues and outdoor gas heaters?

Yes. Barbecues, patio heaters and pool heaters outside, plus cooktops and ovens inside, all get connected, lit and checked. Near the shore we pick fittings that hold up in salt air, and each joint is leak-tested on completion.
